Twenty Designs from Rowan for Patchwork and Quilting

This, the 13th in the series of Kaffe Fassetts highly successful patchwork and quilting books from Rowan, is photographed by Debbie Patterson at the Skansen Museum in Stockholm, the oldest open-air museum in the world, where different styles of old Swedish houses built of richly painted wood make a great backdrop for this collection of 20 new quilts by Kaffe and his chosen designers. Kaffes quilt designs make the most of the new fabric in the collection. He designs fabric often knowing how he would like to use it and how it will look cut up. He uses Serape, an exciting new striped fabric to great effect combined with shot cottons, creating simple graphic quilts where the colours sing out. Other quilts of Kaffes resonate with saturated colour in deep earthy tones. In the Designer Profile, Kaffe explains how he creates his quilts, a fascinating insight into a genius at work.

Judy Baldwin "The large blocks in this quilt are pieced from 4-patch and 9-patch units. Each block is pieced from the same basic selection of fabrics, with the addition of 1 extra featur fabric which gives the finished quilt its distinctive diagonal pattern."

Corienne Kramer "This quilt is made up using large squares of floral print fabrics interspaced with pieced sashing and corner posts, which creates a patten of Shot Cotton stars at the intersections."

Kaffe Fassett "This medallion style quilt is formed around an appliqued centre square which is framed by a series of 5 simple and 4 pieced borders alternating out from the centre. The centre panel has an appliqued design for which we used the freezer paper hand applique method, however it could be done by machine using fusible web if you prefer. It is embellished with embroidery."

Sally Davis "2 block types make up this alternating design. The first block is pieced using a rectangle patch shape. The second block is a framed square, where fussy cut large squares are framed using strips in'log cabin' style cutting the strips to size as you go."

Pauline Smith "The centre and borders of this quilt are pieced from a selection of rectangles, cut to size. Pauline wanted a protable, simple project so hand appliqued the sailing boats to backgrounds, some of which are pre-pieced. She cut her boats and sails by eye and deliberately kept the 'points' of the sails blunt. We have provided example templates for the boat and sail appliques as a starting point, trim and vary them as you please."

Mary Mashuta "TThe blocks for the quilt centre which finished to 10" square are pieced using a square surrounded by 2 rectangles. The resulting pieced square is then set on point by adding a triangle patch shape."

Liza Prior Lucy "This quilt is pieced in stages. First small 9-patch blocks are piecec using a small square patchs shape, these are made from the dark and light fabrics. The small 9-patch blocks are then combined with medium squares to make double 9-patch blocks. These are then set on point diagonally, alternating with large squares of feature Shell Montage fabric."

Kaffe Fassett "This striking quilt is made using squares and rectangles of fabric with some careful matching and mis-matching of stripes which is important to capture the essence of the design. The pieces are joined into sections and then trimmed to produce the 45 degree angles, making the final assembly quite easy."

Ruth Eglington. "Hexagon quilts are fascinating and the idea of machine piecing one prompted Ruth to design this pretty quilt using Kaffe and Philip's brighter pastel fabrics. The Shot Cotton blend so well with the prints and by choosing colour elements that occur in several of the prints it ties the whole palette together. This would be and easy quilt to re-colour perhaps in rich reds or autumn colours. Ruth uses the foundation method as the bias edges of the triangles and hexagons make piecing tricky!"
