An intimate, photo-filled look at the fascinating life and creative output of a renowned artist and designer.

Kaffe Fassett has led an extraordinary life and is a captivating storyteller with a vivid memory. Born in 1937 in San Francisco, he spent much of his youth in Big Sur, where his parents bought a log cabin from Orson Welles and transformed it into the world-famous Nepenthe restaurant, a gathering place of artists of all sorts (Kaffe has many stories to tell about mingling with the likes of Olivia de Havilland, Elizabeth Taylor, and Henry Miller). After attending a boarding school run by the disciples of Krishunamurti, an Indian guru, he studied painting on scholarship at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, but left after less than one year and traveled to England, where he ultimately made his home.

After struggling to make a living as a fine artist for several years, Fassett met the fashion designer Bill Gibb and began designing knitwear for his collection. He went on to design knitwear for Missoni and for private clients like Lauren Bacall, Shirley MacLaine, and Barbra Streisand, and to revolutionise the hand knitting world with his explosive use of color. Further explorations led him to needlepoint, mosaics, rug-making, yarn and fabric design, set design and quilting. Now in his 70s, Fassett continues to produce new work in his studio in London and to travel worldwide to teach and lecture. This intimate autobiography is lavishly filled with Fassett's amazing stories about his bohemian childhood, his hard-earned rise to fame, and all of his creative pursuits. It includes photos of him throughout his life (including his stint as a model in Paris), his home (which is an artwork in itself), his work (everything from childhood drawings to pencil sketches, to oil paintings, to massive tapestries and set designs, to hand knits and quilts) as well as the people and places around the world that have inspired him.

This the tenth in the series of Kaffe Fassett's highly successful patchwork and quilting books from Rowan, celebrating a decade of great books from one of the foremost colourists of his time. It offers the reader 20 new quilt designs that embrace a strong floral theme. Using Kaffe's new fabrics. Photographed at Great Dixter, the 15th century English manor house home of Christopher Lloyd, the well known pioneering gardener and writer, the intensely coloured borders and topiary are the sumptuous backdrop for the glorious collection of new quilt designs from Kaffe and his chosen designers. In the introduction Kaffe talks about the approach to colour he shares with Christopher Lloyd and his joy in seeing the quilts displayed in such a riot of colour.

Kaffe's new printed fabrics, each in six colourways, include Bekah, Brocade Floral and Pinking Flower, which are lush florals and Targets and Jungle Stripe, which are dramatic large scale designs. Spot and Aboriginal Dot are small-scale designs that quilters find particularly useful. Colours range from the rich and sumptuous to delicate pastels. New woven stripes from India come in rich earthy shades and are a welcome addition to the range. To celebrate their arrival, Kaffe has created a second very graphic version of one of his quilt layouts, the first one created in yellow and gold prints. Country Garden Quilts is constructed rather like a cookery book with a sumptuous photograph of the finished project, an ingredients list and written instructions illustrated with coloured diagrams, plus a flat shot' photograph and all the templates needed.

Twenty Designs from Rowan for Patchwork and Quilting

This, the 13th in the series of Kaffe Fassetts highly successful patchwork and quilting books from Rowan, is photographed by Debbie Patterson at the Skansen Museum in Stockholm, the oldest open-air museum in the world, where different styles of old Swedish houses built of richly painted wood make a great backdrop for this collection of 20 new quilts by Kaffe and his chosen designers. Kaffes quilt designs make the most of the new fabric in the collection. He designs fabric often knowing how he would like to use it and how it will look cut up. He uses Serape, an exciting new striped fabric to great effect combined with shot cottons, creating simple graphic quilts where the colours sing out. Other quilts of Kaffes resonate with saturated colour in deep earthy tones. In the Designer Profile, Kaffe explains how he creates his quilts, a fascinating insight into a genius at work.

24 New Projects Made with Shot Cottons and Striped Fabrics

Kaffe Fassett And Liza Prior Lucy

In Kaffe Fassett Quilts Shots and Stripes, quilt master Kaffe Fassett and coauthor Liza Prior Lucy present 24 projects—small and large, beginner and advanced—made with iridescent solid-colored cotton fabrics (called shot cottons) and woven striped cotton fabrics, all photographed in and around his weekend home on England’s southern coast. Inspired by worldwide travels and a plethora of ethnic textiles, including Amish quilts in America, Japanese indigo patched work clothes, and African weavings, the projects featured include full-size bed quilts as well as smaller pieces that can be completed more quickly, such as throws, wall hangings, table runners, and pillows. With Shots and Stripes, Fassett answers the current call for quilts that make bold graphic statements but are not necessarily as time-consuming as some of the work for which he has been previously celebrated.

Praise for Kaffe Fassett Quilts Shots and Stripes:

“Kaffe Fassett is a superstar in the world of textiles.” —Craft Gossip

“As with all of Kaffe’s books—whether quilting or knitting or needlework—the photos and lay-out are lavish. It is a treat for the senses.” —Getting Stitched on the Farm

“Kaffe & Liza did it again! It's amazing to have another pattern book so soon, following . . . Kaffe’s fascinating memoir, Dreaming in Color. Do you really need yet another Kaffe book in your library of quilt books? Why, yes, you do.” —Meg Cox

In Kaffe Fassett's Simple Shapes Spectacular Quilts", world-renowned quilter Kaffe Fassett demonstrates how basic geometric forms - squares, rectangles, triangles, diamonds, circles and quarter circles - found in natural and manmade environments inspire his quilt designs. This is evident in the 23 magnificent, inventive quilts showcased in this book and step-by-step instructions are provided for each one.

Along the way, Fassett also offers over a hundred photos of geometric inspiration from around the world - everything from triangular watermelon slices, to rectangular sheets of corrugated metal on African scrap dwellings, to lollipop-shaped topiary trees in Japan. In the accompanying text, Fassett reveals how he experiences the colours and basic shapes around him, how we can train our own eyes to see this rewarding source of creativity and how we can, just as he does, combine striking fabrics with simple shapes to create our own spectacular quilt designs.

The designs in this book were created with a quest for softness and "Sunday Best" appeal. Many beginner patterns are included and most of them can be sewn from scraps or from precuts. Through history, quilters have lovingly created heirloom quilts from scraps on hand. With our current economic times, these scrappy designs will give you the opportunity to use those bits and pieces of fabric you already have. If you are new to quilting and short on scraps, some designs use popular jelly roll strips or charm squares for that scrappy look. Whatever fabrics you use to create these designs, you can be assured that the recipient of your labor will cherish these keepsakes for baby for years to come!

Sibylle von Olfers. Illustrations: Sieglinde Schoen Smith, Translation Jack Zipes.

Written over 100 years ago and newly illustrated with an award-winning handmade quilt, this enchanting story celebrates nature's changing seasons.

Deep below the ground, Mother Earth rouses her sleepy children. The little ones ready themselves for spring, then join a jubilant procession of bugs and beetles up into the summer meadows. With each colorful turn of the page, the children discover new surprises waiting just for them.

In rhyming verse and vibrant illustrations, this enchanting story captivates the imagination of the youngest readers, gently leading them to make their own discoveries outdoors.

"Young children will delight in this playful romp through nature's seasons. Sieglinde Schoen Smith's wonderful quilt makes the story shine!" Jinny Beyer, quilting expert and author

Sibylle von Olfers is the author of the original German folk tale, "Etwas von den Wurzelkindern," which sold more than 800,000 copies when it was first published in 1906. Exactly a century later, Sieglinde Schoen Smith's quilted interpretation, Mother Earth and Her Children, won the top prize at America's most prestigious quilt show, inspiring this new translation. Jack Zipes (University of Minnesota) is the foremost expert on folklore in the United States. His works include the definitive English-language translation of The Complete Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm.
