Kumiko Sudo

20 projects inspired by Wagashi--tiny but beautifully crafted Japanese candies. Each one is a piece of art in miniature.

Patterns for 20 handcrafted projects, each an exquisite accessory and a tiny work of art, are provided in this step-by-step guide. The centerpiece of the handbook is a range of stunning fabric jewelry—necklaces, bracelets, and earrings—crafted from silks or cottons complemented by a colorful decorative cord that is woven or knotted into unique designs, called kumihimo. Instructions are provided for several unusual craft techniques including Japanese knotwork, Delica beading, and fabric origami, each with color drawings and step-by-step directions. Projects are accompanied by color photographs evocative of contemporary Japanese style, and every chapter opens with a wonderful original watercolor by the author, as well as text providing reflections on Japanese life and art.

In "Philena's Friendship Quilt: A Quaker Farewell to Ohio", Lynda Salter Chenoweth discovers the story behind a Quaker signature quilt made in Ohio, in 1853. Chenoweth practices what she calls 'fabric archaeology' to reveal not only the identity of the quilt recipient and details of her life and community but also a striking feature of the quilt itself - a hidden design element created by the deliberate placement of names on the quilt's surface. Chenoweth also describes nineteenth-century signature quilts and their appeal to Quaker quiltmakers.

Signature quilts, also known as friendship quilts, were often given as mementos to mark important community events. Chenoweth shares the methodology used to determine that Philena's quilt was made for Philena Cooper Hambleton, a resident of Butler Township in Columbiana County before she left Ohio to begin a new life in Iowa with her husband and two daughters. Chenoweth devotes the final chapter to the story of Philena's life and that of her immediate family. It follows her from her birth as Philena Evaline Cooper in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, in 1822, until her death in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1915. The details uncovered from information inscribed on the face of this quilt illustrate the value of quilts as important documents from which history can be recreated and past lives understood. "Philena's Friendship Quilt" is the fourth book in the highly popular "Ohio Quilt Series". The series tells the stories behind the social and historical circumstances that have influenced this unique and enduring American craft.

Barbara Brackman

Quilt historian Barbara Brackman, honorary curator for the Spencer Museum of Art, chose carefully from the museum’s exquisite quilt collection to assemble the quilts for this exhibit, Flora Botanica. On view at the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas, July 12-October 12, 2008, the exhibit examined sources and symbolism in floral pattern from various perspectives. The selected quilts ranged in age from the late-18th century to the recent past.

This 96 page catalog includes photos of all the quilts included in the exhibit. Also included are five new quilt projects drawn from the old patterns, plus an introduction by Barbara about how many of these quilts found their way into the Spencer collection.
