A patchwork quilt is a combination of many elements - fabric design, colour, block design and arrangement, quilting and embellishment etc. Our own tastes and opinions will determine what particular quilts we prefer. But one aspect that most people can agree on (even if they don’t consciously think about it) is that accuracy is important. We love symmetry and our eyes are drawn to it. With the occasional exception, wonky blocks just won’t do!

The invention of the rotary cutter (combined with a ruler and cutting mat) revolutionised patchwork. It made possible to repeatedly cut accurate shapes, several layers at a time, far more accurately than with scissors. Since its introduction patchwork and quilting has blossomed. The improvements in speed and accuracy have meant that completing a quilt is a reality, not a dream and patchworkers can now concentrate on the more enjoyable aspects of the craft.

The Big Shot does not replace the mat, rotary cutter and ruler, they are still essential tools of patchwork. What the Big Shot does do is take the benefits of speed and accuracy to a whole new level. Some of its important advantages are:

* It can cut up to 8 layers of patchwork weight fabric at a time.

* As all the patches are cut from the same die they will be accurate to a far greater degree than cutting with a rotary cutter.

* No chance of slipping or mis-reading the ruler and making the wrong cut.

* It cuts patch shapes that are almost impossible with a rotary cutter like the apple core patch in the quilt, right.

* It cuts intricate shapes such as flowers, stars and animals which opens up a whole world of possiblilties for fusible applique.

* For lovers of English Paper Piecing the hexagon dies can be used to cut the fabric and the papers to sew around perfectly every time.
