Wadding or Batting
Should I be looking to purchase wadding or batting? In the UK we use the term wadding to refer to the inner layer of the patchwork quilt sandwich, in America they call the same thing batting.
So a patchwork quilt has three layers "the quilt sandwich". The quilt top is usually made up of pieced patchwork blocks. The filler layer in the middle is made of wadding, or if you are from America batting. Then the third layer or quilt back is often an unpieced single piece of fabric.
Tying these three layers together is the quilting. the quilting can be very simple or can be intricate designs that help to emphasise or enhance the patchwork blocks.
So if you see in your quilt pattern or book mention of batting, for example use a polyester queen size batting then browse our shop for a polyester queen size wadding instead.
