Aurifil Threads produce some of the most popular patchwork and quilting threads on the market.
Aurifil was founded in 1983 in Milan, Italy and from the outset produced beautifully coloured threads with the highest quality cotton threads. Aurifil threads is still a family owned business.

Aurifil’s NEW 100% Cotton 8wt/2ply thread comes in 45 of our cotton colours and is wound on a white wooden spool. It is the heaviest weight 2ply thread that we offer and is perfect for hand embroidery, hand quilting, cross stitch, embellishment, Sashiko, redwork, and so much more.

Aurifil’s 100% Cotton 12wt/2ply thread comes in all 270 of our Cotton colours and is wound on a red spool. It is perfect for hand applique, hand embroidery, hand quilting, cross stitch, embellishment, handmade lace, machine applique, blanket stitch, machine embroidery (especially for designs that use a longer stitch length), machine art quilting, Sashiko, redwork, lower looper serging, and longarm quilting.

When using 12wt thread by machine, we recommend using a much thinner thread in the bobbin, like our 40wt.
When using in a Longarm machine, quilt slowly, using a longer stitch and silicone conditioner where necessary.

Go a little slower than normal while using in a Longarm machine, especially when creating curves.

Because of its slightly thicker weight, it is perfect for use with sewing bags, toys or dolls, garments, or when a more defined topstitching or quilting pattern is desired. It is also terrific for Single, Double or Triple Strand Cross Stitch, Hand Piecing, Bobbin and Machine Lace, Machine Applique, Machine Embroidery, Edge-to-Edge, Pantographs, and Custom Longarm Quilting.

Aurifil’s 50wt/2ply thread is our most versatile and most popular Cotton thread. It is available in all 270 of our Cotton colors, and is wound on our iconic orange spool. The 50wt is strong and thin, and results in remarkably flat and crisp seams. While it is wonderful for piecing, subtle quilting & topstitching, and English Paper Piecing it also works incredibly well for Needle Turn Applique, Bobbin and Machine Lace, Machine Applique (Straight Stitch, ZigZag, Blind Hem and Blanket Stitch,) Machine Embroidery, Dense Machine Quilting, Subtle Machine and Longarm Quilting, Basting, Whole Cloth and Micro Quilting, and Dense Background Designs.

Such a thin thread is perfect for a variety of techniques, including English Paper Piecing, Hand Applique, Machine Embroidery, Machine Applique, Free Motion Quilting, Free Motion Couching, and more.

Aurifil’s 6-strand 100% Cotton floss is wound on a gorgeous wooden spool, perfect for easy travel and the prevention of pesky tangles! It is available in all 270 of our Cotton colors and boasts 18 yards per spool. We find Aurifloss to be excellent for Cross Stitch, Huck Embroidery, Miniature Punch-Needle Embroidery, Tatting, Needle Point, Crochet, Applique, Big Stitch Quilting, Accent stitching on garments and other items, and hand embroidery.

Aurifil’s Wool 12wt thread is a lovely, soft blend of 50% Acrylic and 50% Wool. It is available in 45 unique colors on a red spool. Use this thread when you want to create texture or visually pleasing details. It can also be used for Single or Double Strand Cross Stitch, Hand Embroidery, Machine Applique, Machine Quilting, and Lower Looper Serging.

The newest of Aurifil’s Cotton threads, Forty3 was introduced in Fall of 2017. It is a 40wt, 3ply thread made specifically to handle the rigor of today’s high-speed, high-tech Longarm machines. It has all the versatility and lustrous color of the original 40wt, with the added benefit of extra strength. It is currently available in 73 of our Cotton colours. This thread is perfect for longarm quilting, but is also a star for garment sewing, bag-making, domestic machine sewing, and more.
